Our Code of Ethics
 How it all started.....
At Uptown Dogs, we have been involved in the exciting hobby of breeding, exhibiting and raising dogs for over 20 years. Not only do we have very high standards about how we raise and socialize our puppies, but we are also working toward creating the ultimate companion breed, one litter at a time. It is the pursuit of this goal that keeps our attention on each and every puppy, taking care to ensure we are producing only the healthiest and best quality dogs possible.
The Evolution of our CONFETTI SCHNOODLES
All pure breed dogs began with the combining of two or more breeds. Many of today's pure breeds have a history that is not well recorded, but we do know that each and every breed today was once the dreamchild of someone with definite goals and needs.
Today, it is common place to find the 'Doodles' of the world for sale in every newspaper. It is safe to say that most are from unscrupulous sources. Uptown Dogs is more than just a breeder of 'Cross Breeds' or Designer Dogs'. We do believe in the improved health associated with the crossing of breeds, and this is the cornerstone of our philosophy in the evolution of our new breed standard. That being said, with a background in showing and exhibiting pure breed dogs, we also feel the accountability to a breed standard and code of ethics is imperative in our breeding program. We are not content to simply put two breeds together and call it quits. Oh no, that's just not challenging enough for us. We want more for our dogs and the families who love them! We feel it is necessary to create a breed standard that will exemplify the positive traits we are aiming for, while eliminating the traits that are less satisfactory. For instance, in Schnoodles, the coat of an F1 can become scruffy looking as adults, some are very thin and straight while others were fluffier. We prefer the fluffy coat and square boxy look, therefore, we are selective in choosing the parents for each breeding, striving to improve each litter we produce. After many litters, and listening to the feedback from our families over the years, we have worked to improve coat quality while maintaining intelligence and the temperament we are famous for. Searching worldwide for an unrelated, healthy gene pool to contribute to our CONFETTI Schnoodles, we have found it more and more difficult to find 'clean lines' with no health issues within the parent breeds. Due to over-breeding, in-breeding and lack of knowledge from inexperienced breeders, we are finding (and hearing) of more reports of genetic illnesses within the Mini Schnauzer and Poodle breeds. We have taken notes of these lines, scratched them off the list of potential additions, and gone back to the drawing board again and again. After each litter we take notes of the coat, stature, and personality of each offspring. We keep in contact with our families and ask for pictures and updates for our records. Some parent dogs have been used once to add a trait into our lines, and never used again. Some have been used several times with different combos to contribute to our lines. We have worked for over two decades to bring new colors and variations into our breed standard. We have studied other breeds and their qualities to decide which qualities will balance and enhance what we are producing. It's been a long hard road, with many, many obstacles. There have been times we are ready to throw in the towel, and times we have cried with tears of joy. In the end, it is the love of our dogs that keep our focus on what is most important; producing the best quality example of our breed. The popularity of our dogs and demand for our puppies has grown over the years, and we have cautiously chosen to remain small, with our emphasis on the continual evolution of our breed.
Sadly, with the rise of the internet, we have also watched the decline in quality breeding as more and more puppy mills and backyard breeders are popping up, trying to cash in on the designer dog craze. While there are still a small minority of responsible breeders, recent events have caused us to grow concerned with the ethics of most designer dog and cross breeders. We see an alarming focus on selling puppies, and no further research or advancement of these breeds from this group of breeders. There is little to no combined effort to create a breed standard, a breed club, or really any organized group for accountability to speak of. This is a sad state of affairs for our sweet Doodles.
To an ethical breeder, the notion of making a business of selling puppies without the background or knowledge required to do the breed justice is a dangerous pursuit. We've always had a higher calling to advance forward and produce the best quality dogs we can. When we started out, we didn't know of any other breeders of Schnoodles, but today there are many websites that are selling poor quality dogs from poor quality kennels, creating a very bad image for those of us that remain true to our standards. Thus, we want to move away from association with these type of breeders.
To us, our dogs are our passion, a purposeful endeavor in which we maintain a standard of excellence in breeding, ownership and education. In the year 2011 we produced the first litters with our newest colorations. The results were fabulous, and we moved closer to our goal with improved coat quality and structure while maintaining our wonderfully famous personalities.
As we work toward our goal of perfecting our unique line of "Confetti Schnoodles" we will be moving forward with a new breed name for our special and unique little dogs.
We are a code of ethics breeder, with only the best in mind for our dogs and the families that love them.
Thanks for visiting, we look forward to sharing our beautiful little dogs with you! |
